Green Arrow (2023) Issue 8 Review

Covers

The main cover by artist Sean Izaakse and colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. is intentionally busy with sound effects. While the colors for the sound effects and characters are nice the design arguably feels too much like a generic splash page.

Artist Alan Quah is responsible for the creation of a variant cover. However, Quah goes too epic with the amount of arrows that are flying in Oliver Queen/Green Arrow’s direction.

The 1:25 variant cover is by artist Howard Porter and colorist Rain Beredo. Though Beredo does a decent job with colors Porter makes mistakes with some proportions and Dinah Lance/Black Canary’s torso.

Story

Fajardo Jr., penciller Phil Hester, and inker Eric Gapstur create some compelling visuals. However, the text elements created by writer Joshua Williamson and letterer Troy Peteri are rather lacking. For Peteri’s part it is just the problem of sizing things way too small. Unfortunately, this means the majority of the problems are from Williamson’s script. He tries to do a certain type of storytelling, but falls flat when using a specific twist to the narrative. Also the protagonist in this issue is rather out of character which again makes the plot feel pointless. Finally Williamson’s scripting comes across like he is painting by numbers using tropes and clichés, but at the same time not paying attention.

Not Recommended.
