The Sentry (2023) Issue 1 Review

Covers

Artist Ben Harvey is the creator of the main cover. This cover’s design evokes mystery, and a very slight sense of legacy.

Colorist Guru E-FX and artist Salvador Larroca combine their talents to create a variant cover. Yet, it feels too confusing due to the busyness of the layers in the design.

Cover artist Peach Momoko creates a very vampiric type version of Bob Reynolds/The Sentry for a nightmare variant. The color palette excellently complements the design.

The variant cover by artist Skottie Young is arguably cute and terrifying. It is cute due to the art style, but horrifying due to the character’s history as The Void.

Artist Emanuela Lapucchino is responsible for the creation of an incentive variant cover. While it is high quality in execution it brings nothing original to the table.

Story

Writer Jason Loo creates an intriguing premise and a few interesting characters. However, there are technically three beginnings in this issue, and this creates some tonal whiplash. On the plus side, the visuals by artist Luigi Zagaria and colorist Arthur Hesli make up for some of the tonal whiplash. In particular the visuals by Zagaria and Hesli expertly showcase different backgrounds and skin pigmentations. Finally letterer Joe Caramagna does a great job at emphasizing the dialogue.

The recap page features the work of Ben Harvey on art and presumably text by writer Cara Liebowitz and designs by designer Carlos Lao. It is a commendable piece using evidence board tropes.

Three steps above barely recommended status.
