Strange (2022) Issue 8 Review

Covers

Artist Lee Garbett is responsible for the main cover. It shows a creative use of negative space with a character appearing from it. The character poses suggest mysticism and horror. There is a considerable amount of texture with the cape. All said this is a very high quality piece of art.

Artist Greg Land and colorist Frank D’Armata (who is credited as a variant cover artist) are responsible for the variant cover. While the colors D’Armata applies are high quality Land’s attempts at being an artist rather than a tracer severely lower the quality.

Story

Writer Jed MacKay creates a script that is arguably of medium quality. Most of the story is expositional, and debatably reliant on the text to understand. Though artist Stefano Landini, penciler Marcelo Ferreira, and inker Roberto Poggi are able to tell some of the tale without the need for the dialogue. It is just that their high quality work is hurt by some of the narration. On the plus side, colorist Java Tartaglia and letterer Cory Petit get to enhance the work of the art and writing with their skills. Petit also gets to tie everything together with his work while balancing his colored texts off Tartaglia’s work. Finally MacKay is still producing interesting new ideas.

Three steps above barely recommended status.
