Strange (2022) Issue 3 Review

Covers

Artist Björn Barends creates a cover that appropriately ties in to the ongoing story. It also features some great computer generated art with nice texture.

The variant cover by artist Ema Lupacchino and colorist David Curiel feels a bit generic in terms of design. However, the color palette and line work are high quality.

Artist Peach Momoko uses a beautiful array of hues to create an otherworldly feel to her variant cover’s design. Her style and design combine together to evoke, and possibly surpass, Steve Ditko’s.

Leonardo Romero’s coloring is great. The curvature of Romero’s line work has an amazing swoop to it. Also the majority of the lines have a nice chunky, but confident, look to them. Yet, Romero’s otherwise delightful cover is hurt by the cash grab element of being a Skrull Variant. Meaning It has nothing to do with the story. Thus, it is in my professional opinion a waste of talent.

Story

Writer Jed MacKay does mostly great with the dialogue. However, MacKay does go a bit unusual in leaving a colon in the script. Though this does make the lettering of letterer Cory Petit more notable. Petit is also notable for doing a good job this issue with emphasis and sizing. While colorist Java Tartaglia does a great job enhancing the atmospheric mood of the settings that penciler Marcelo Ferriera establishes. Finally inkers Roberto Poggi and Don Ho do a great job at keeping the visuals mostly consistent despite their different styles.

Recommended.
